Haiti – Haitans Must Choose Beliefs That Strengten Them

On January 12th,2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. Pat Robertson, a television Evangelist, said that, “They got together and swore a pact with the devil.” “They said we will serve you, if you’ll get us free from the french.” “A true story, and so the devil said, okay its a deal and um they kicked the french out.” “But ever since they have been cursed by one thing or the other.”

Many times throughout history outside forces have been judged to be the cause of events explained by science. It was once thought that eclipses of the sun and moon had something to do with God or the devil. That earthquakes and volcanoes were signs that the Gods were angry.

The notion that an entity called the devil can make pacts with humans that effect free will and the lives of people for generations to come is illogical. If people from your past can “curse” you today then you have no free will. More than that why pray at all if your already cursed, and how do you know what you are cursed for and how can you be not cursed.

The reason I am posting this is because there are individuals that believe that people can be cursed, that 911 happened because of “sin” or that God is going to favor one group or individual over another. While I respect all beliefs I cannot understand an argument that is without logic. Many people from Haiti are very religious and are asking themselves, why, why God? The real answer lies within each individual person. Each person must come to their own conclusion for the why. But if their beliefs do not support them, if their beliefs make then unloved or not good enough, then they simply hold them down further in misery.

The idea that a Christian can “sin” is a closely held belief, but sin can only occur with free choice, for if God or the devil determines your choice for you how can it be a sin and how can you be punished for someone else’s sin.

Beliefs, are to be respected, but if your belief is illogical or contradicts your own teachings it cannot be believed.

Think about your own beliefs about groups of people who are different from you and if you think they deserve to be punished for something ask yourself what they did that makes then not as good as you. Ask yourself why your better and ask yourself when someone else is going to be saying the same thing about you.
